Why Difficulties Can Still Occur During a Raj Yog Period

One of the most common questions people ask in astrology is:

"If my Raj Yog period is running, why am I still facing difficulties? Why does life feel like a struggle during a supposedly powerful phase?"

The answer lies in a concept discussed by the classical astrologer Kalyan Varma in the revered text Saravali — a concept known as Raj Bhanga, or the weakening and partial cancellation of a Raj Yog.

Many people assume that the mere presence of a Raj Yog guarantees extraordinary success. In reality, classical astrology takes a much deeper view. A yoga is not judged solely by its formation in the birth chart; its strength, support, and ability to deliver results must also be examined.

Consider the example of a Karmadhipati Yog, formed through an exchange between the lord of the 9th house (fortune and dharma) and the lord of the 10th house (career and karma). On paper, this is considered a highly auspicious combination. Yet the existence of the yoga alone does not guarantee its fullest expression.

For a Raj Yog to manifest at its highest potential, the planets involved should also possess strength in the Navamsa chart. Ideally, they should occupy their own signs, exalted signs, friendly signs, or otherwise supportive placements. These conditions strengthen the promise shown in the natal chart and allow the yoga to operate more freely.

However, if those same planets are weakened by enemy signs, afflicted by malefic influences, or placed in challenging houses such as the 6th, 8th, or 12th in divisional charts, the yoga's power becomes compromised. The Raj Yog is not necessarily destroyed, but its expression becomes restricted.

This is why some individuals experience success during a Raj Yog period, yet find that the success arrives only after intense effort, repeated setbacks, delays, legal disputes, health concerns, or personal sacrifices. The yoga still functions, but it does not operate with its full strength.

A useful way to understand this is to think of a Raj Yog as a powerful engine. The engine may be excellent, but if the fuel supply is weak, the roads are difficult, or critical parts are damaged, the vehicle will not perform at its maximum capacity. It will still move forward, but the journey may be slower and more demanding than expected.

Therefore, when evaluating a Raj Yog, the question should never be simply, "Does the yoga exist?" The more important question is, "How strong is the yoga, and what conditions support or obstruct its expression?"

A Raj Yog can promise elevation, authority, recognition, and opportunity. But the quality of that experience depends greatly on the overall strength of the planets involved. A strong yoga may bring success with relative ease, while a weakened yoga may bring the same destination through struggle, perseverance, and lessons that shape the individual along the way.
