One of the oldest questions in spiritual traditions is whether life is governed by destiny or free will. The answer offered by many karmic philosophies is that both exist simultaneously, each operating within its own domain.
According to this view, certain broad themes of life are shaped by accumulated karma from previous births. These larger milestones often include the family into which one is born, significant relationships, marriage, the possibility of children, major turning points, serious illnesses, and ultimately the circumstances surrounding death. These events form the larger framework of an incarnation and are considered part of the soul's karmic curriculum.
However, this does not mean that every detail of life is predetermined.
The countless choices that make up daily existence—what time you wake up, what you eat, how you speak to others, how you respond to difficulties, what habits you cultivate, and the thoughts you entertain—remain largely within your sphere of influence. These smaller choices may seem insignificant in isolation, yet they gradually shape the quality of your life and your future karma.
This distinction is important because it explains the purpose of spiritual practices and remedies.
A remedy is not necessarily intended to erase every major karmic event. Rather, its primary function is often to improve the way a person experiences and navigates life. It can strengthen the mind, improve decision-making, reduce unnecessary suffering, create emotional stability, and help an individual respond more wisely to circumstances.
Two people may face the same karmic challenge. One becomes bitter, fearful, and overwhelmed. The other develops resilience, wisdom, and spiritual maturity. The external event may be similar, but the internal experience is vastly different.
This is where remedies, discipline, prayer, meditation, charity, self-reflection, and conscious living become meaningful. They refine the thought process. They improve daily conduct. They reduce self-created suffering and help align a person with more constructive patterns of action.
In this understanding, destiny provides the stage, but free will determines how the role is performed.
The major chapters of life may already be written, but the quality of each page is shaped by the choices made every day. And often, it is these daily choices—not the grand events themselves—that ultimately determine whether a life feels fulfilled, meaningful, and spiritually successful.
