In sadhana (spiritual practice), Visarjan is the sacred act of respectfully concluding a period of worship. It is the ritual “sending off” of a deity - symbolizing the return of the Divine from a temporarily invoked form back into the boundless, formless consciousness. It marks the completion of a cycle, just as seen at the end of festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, reminding us that creation and dissolution are inseparable parts of existence.
At its heart, Visarjan is about non-attachment. One worships with devotion, love, and intensity - yet learns not to cling to the physical form. The clay idol is honored, then returned to nature, reinforcing the truth that nothing material is permanent.
During worship, divinity is invoked into the idol through Prana Pratishta - the ritual infusion of life force. Visarjan gently reverses this process. The invoked presence is respectfully released, acknowledging that the Divine was never confined to the form; it was invited, honored, and then allowed to merge back into the infinite.
On a deeper level, Visarjan represents a shift - from outer ritual to inner realization. The external form dissolves, but the awareness it awakened must now live within the devotee. The message is clear: the Divine does not reside only in an idol, but in consciousness itself.
It also reflects the universal law - whatever is created will eventually dissolve. Accepting this rhythm of birth and return cultivates spiritual maturity and surrender.
Ultimately, Visarjan reminds the seeker that the goal of sadhana is not attachment to form, but realization of the formless, eternal reality that underlies all forms.
So after all this information that you've read, as a seeker you should do the ritual “sending off” of a deity by mentally praying to God that all the devis and devtas that you have indirectly or directly invoked during the day back to their respective lokas. One should do it everyday. I am not detailing as to how I do it, but giving out a raw outline that will be easy to follow through by the masses. I do it everyday by the Grace of Devi Pratyangira for all the devis and devtas I have invoked during the day and for all that you would know, I never mostly do it for just Devi Pratyangira. <3
