The Padma Purana narrates the significance of Yogini Ekadashi through the story of Hemamali, a gardener associated with Kubera, the lord of wealth. Hemamali neglected his duties and, as a consequence of his actions, was cursed.
Seeking liberation from the curse, Hemamali observed the fast of Yogini Ekadashi with sincere repentance and devotion. Through his observance and spiritual discipline, he was ultimately freed from the consequences of the curse.
The deeper message of this story goes beyond the curse itself. It reflects the transformative power of genuine remorse, discipline and devotion. A person who sincerely recognises their mistakes and makes a conscious effort to correct their path can bring about a profound change in their life.
Ekadashi, therefore, is not merely a practice of abstaining from food. Fasting is one part of the observance, but its deeper purpose lies in self-restraint, purification of the mind and turning one's attention away from excessive worldly distractions.
At its heart, Ekadashi is an opportunity to cultivate discipline, control the senses and spend time in sincere contemplation of the Divine. The physical fast becomes meaningful when it is accompanied by inner purification, devotion and a genuine intention to transform oneself.
