Rahu, Ashlesha, and the Arrival of a Foreign Power

 

When the British first arrived in India in 1608, an interesting astrological symbolism is often discussed by those who study mundane astrology.

At that time, Rahu was said to be transiting Ashlesha Nakshatra.

In Vedic astrology, Rahu carries the symbolism of the foreign, the unfamiliar, and influences that come from beyond one’s own boundaries. It is associated with outsiders, foreign connections, unusual ambitions, and forces that enter a system from outside and create significant transformation.

Ashlesha, the Nakshatra of the serpent, adds another layer to this symbolism.

The British initially entered India through the language of trade. The East India Company came as a commercial organisation seeking economic opportunities. The first appearance was not that of a conquering force, but of merchants and traders.

Looking further into the Navamsha symbolism, Rahu was associated with Pisces along with Mercury according to this interpretation.

Pisces is traditionally connected with vast oceans, distant lands, and territories beyond familiar boundaries. Mercury represents commerce, negotiation, trade, calculation, and business dealings.

The combination creates a symbolic picture of a foreign commercial force arriving through maritime routes.

However, history shows that the relationship did not remain limited to trade. Over time, commercial influence transformed into political power. Through alliances, diplomacy, military strategies, and administrative control, the British expanded their authority across India.

This is where the symbolism of Rahu and Ashlesha becomes fascinating.

Rahu does not always represent something negative; it represents expansion beyond limits, foreign influence, ambition, and unconventional paths. But when combined with Ashlesha’s serpent symbolism, it can also represent strategies that operate beneath the surface.
