In Vedic philosophy, the three guṇas—Sattva (purity and harmony), Rajas (activity and desire), and Tamas (inertia and resistance)—are used as a framework to understand the qualitative nature of existence.
In some traditional astrological interpretations, planets are symbolically grouped according to these guṇas to describe their dominant psychological and functional tendencies:
☀️🌙🟡 Sattva Guna (Purity, Wisdom, Balance)
Moon, Sun, Jupiter
These planets are generally associated with clarity, guidance, nourishment, and higher understanding. They are interpreted as supporting stability, consciousness, and ethical or spiritual orientation.
🧠🌸 Rajas Guna (Desire, Activity, Passion)
Mercury, Venus
These planets are associated with interaction, expression, intelligence, attraction, and engagement with the external world. They reflect movement, creativity, and desire-driven activity.
🔥🪐 Tamas Guna (Inertia, Structure, Resistance)
Mars, Saturn
These planets are often linked with effort, endurance, discipline, conflict, and resistance to change. Symbolically, they represent force, constraint, and the material grounding of experience.
☄️ Rahu and Ketu are sometimes treated separately
In many traditions, the lunar nodes are not strictly placed in the triguna system, as they represent shadowy or non-material influences that operate beyond standard classifications.
🪷 Key Note
Classical Jyotiṣa uses such classifications as symbolic tools for understanding planetary temperament. However, a planet’s actual results depend on its sign, house, dignity, aspects, and planetary periods (dashas), rather than guṇa classification alone.
