What Is Dharma?

 

Jupiter's sign, Sagittarius, is traditionally associated with Dharma. But the moment we say “Dharma,” many people immediately think of religion, पूजा, rituals, temples, or performing prescribed ceremonies. Dharma is much deeper than that.

Dharma is the natural order of things. It is the principle by which something fulfils its true nature and performs the role it is meant to perform.

The Sun's Dharma is to give light. It does not ask who deserves its warmth before it rises. It simply shines.

The Dharma of air is to move and sustain the breath. The Dharma of water is to flow and quench the thirst of the thirsty. Fire burns and transforms. The river follows its nature and nourishes everything along its path.

In the same way, a human being also has a Dharma.

Our Dharma is not merely to perform rituals and then return to ordinary life unchanged. It is to seek knowledge, stand with truth, practise honesty, develop compassion, and use whatever abilities we have been given in a way that is useful to others.

A person who has knowledge but refuses to share it is not necessarily living their Dharma. A person who has wealth but uses it only for themselves may also be missing something. And someone who has power but uses that power to exploit others has moved away from the natural principle of Dharma.

Dharma is therefore less about what you say you believe and more about how you live.

This is also why Sanatan Dharma has traditionally held nature in such reverence. Rivers are not merely bodies of water. Trees are not merely resources. Animals are not merely commodities. The Earth itself is regarded as Mother.

There is a reason for this.

When you understand Dharma, you begin to understand that human beings are not separate from creation. We are part of it. The river has its Dharma, the tree has its Dharma, the animal has its Dharma—and we have ours.

Perhaps this is the real wisdom of Sagittarius.

It does not merely ask you to believe in God.

It asks you to understand your place within the order of existence—and then have the courage to live according to it.
