🌙 Adhik Maas — The Sacred Extra Lunar Month

Adhik Maas is an additional lunar month added periodically within the Hindu calendar system to harmonize the lunar and solar cycles. The Hindu lunar calendar follows the movement of the Moon, while the seasons are aligned with the Sun. Because the lunar year is shorter than the solar year by roughly 11 days, this difference gradually accumulates. Approximately every 32 months and 16 days, an extra month is inserted to restore balance between the two cycles. This sacred additional month is known as Adhik Maas, also called Purushottam Maas in many traditions.

This period is traditionally regarded as highly auspicious for:

* spiritual reflection,

* devotion,

* self-discipline,

* charity,

* pilgrimage,

* and inner purification.

Many devotees dedicate this month to:

* worship of Vishnu,

* chanting,

* meditation,

* fasting,

* reading sacred texts,

* and sattvic living.

Traditionally, Adhik Maas is considered less favorable for initiating major worldly activities such as:

* marriage ceremonies,

* housewarming rituals,

* or large material ventures.

Instead, the emphasis shifts toward:

🕉️ spiritual growth

🙏 seva and charity

🌿 simplicity and restraint

🚩 pilgrimage and devotion

🥛 sattvic food and fasting

The deeper symbolism of Adhik Maas is profound: it is a “pause” inserted into time itself — a sacred interval meant not for external expansion, but for inner alignment.
